Our Favorite Apps For Learning Meditation and Sticking with It

With the pace of modern life, we could all use a few more moments of daily zen. If you haven’t tried meditation, it’s a great way to relieve stress, focus inward, and get some perspective. But getting into meditation can be intimidating. That’s why we’re happy to see that a number of quality apps have come along that make meditation much more accessible to the average person. Dip your toes into some daily meditations with one of these handy apps:

1. Insight Timer (Apple Store and Google Play) – Free (In-App Purchases)

Want to take control of your meditation? You get to select the length of time you want to meditate and also the type of meditation you’re interested in (daily affirmation, concentration, leadership). The app includes user groups and also a number of well-known mindfulness personalities you can subscribe to.

2. Calm (Apple Store and Google Play) – Free (In-App Purchases)

Choose from a wide variety of guided meditation sessions in lengths of 3, 5, 10, 15, 20 or 25 minutes so you can choose the perfect length of time to fit with your schedule. To encourage daily meditation, the app’s Daily Calm gives users a new 10-minute program every day that’s perfect to do first thing in the morning or right before bedtime.

3. 10% Happier (Apple Store and Google Play) – Free (In-App Purchases)

Branded as “meditation for fidgety skeptics” and based on the bestselling book of the same name, this app has daily videos and guided meditations to teach you meditation, with a real emphasis on accessibility and on introducing meditation to an audience that wouldn’t typically try it.

4. Headspace (Apple Store and Google Play) – Free Trial

This low-key app is also designed for those just testing out if meditation might be right for them. The free trial features 10 exercises that are perfect for beginners, and you can also link up with other users on the app to build-in some accountability that can help you stick with it.

5. The Breathing App (Apple Store and Google Play) – Free!

Created by guru Deepak Chopra, this completely free app promotes a technique called resonant breathing. Key to the way Buddhist monks meditate, this technique involves slowing your breathing down and only taking 5 -7 breaths per minute (half the normal breathing rate). A simple but effective ball on your screen will grow and shrink with your breaths to really help you focus in.
